The basic problem with PEMs in this case is to optimize penetration, proton flux and durability.
Unfortunately, normally, the highly expanded film does not have very good mechanical properties.
The two variables proton transport and durability are closely related to traditional homopolymers or random polymer films.

Through the survey literature, Lloyd and his co-authors observed that there appeared to be an upper limit between conductivity and water concentration in the proton exchange membrane.

The gas permeability properties of new materials are usually compared to Lloyd\'s original upper limit or his recent update to show progress in separation performance.
In 2007, he extended the concept to the field of fuel cell film.
